State Inspection

New York State Vehicle Inspection Rules

New York law says your car must be safe every time you drive on a public road. Most registered vehicles need an inspection at least once every 12 months.

You must get inspected before your current sticker expires. You also need a new inspection when the vehicle is registered under a new name. AE Auto Services is a licensed inspection station with certified inspectors.

When you ask for an inspection, the station must inspect your vehicle or give you a written appointment date within eight working days. You cannot renew your registration unless your vehicle passed inspection in the last 12 months.

Safety Items We Check

Our safety inspection covers the main parts that keep you safe on the road:

  • Seat belts: Must work and be attached properly. One belt is needed for each seat in most newer cars.
  • Brakes: We check pads, lines, fluid, parking brake, and how well the car stops straight.
  • Steering and suspension: We look at the front end, shocks, springs, frame, and wheel parts for wear or damage.
  • Tires: Tread must be deep enough and tires must not have big cuts, bulges, or bad damage.
  • Lights: Headlights, tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, backup lights, license plate lights, and hazard flashers must all work. Lenses must not be broken or missing.
  • Windshield and glass: Glass must be safe and in good shape. Wipers must work and blades must be in good condition.
  • Horn and mirrors: Horn must work. Mirrors must be mounted correctly and give a clear view.
  • Fuel leaks: No fuel may drip or pool under the vehicle.

Emissions and Check Engine Light

Most cars also need an emissions test at the same time as the safety inspection. For most 1996 and newer gas vehicles, we check the on-board computer system. The check engine light must work and must be off to pass.

We also check that required emissions parts are present and connected. That includes items like the catalytic converter, gas cap, and other pollution control parts your vehicle came with from the factory.

If Your Vehicle Does Not Pass

We tell you what failed and what needs to be fixed. The shop must have your permission before starting any repairs.

Many problems are small, like a burned out bulb, a check engine code, or a worn wiper blade. We can often make the repair in our shop and finish the inspection the same day.
